    Classification of Quantum Hall Universality Classes by $\ W_{1+\infty}\ $ symmetry

    We show how two-dimensional incompressible quantum fluids and their excitations can be viewed as  W1+ \ W_{1+\infty}\ edge conformal field theories, thereby providing an algebraic characterization of incompressibility. The Kac-Radul representation theory of the  W1+ \ W_{1+\infty}\ algebra leads then to a purely algebraic complete classification of hierarchical quantum Hall states, which encompasses all measured fractions.     Monte--Carlo Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz

    We introduce a Monte--Carlo simulation approach to thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA). We exemplify the method on one particle integrable models, which include a free boson and a free fermions systems along with the scaling Lee--Yang model (SLYM). It is confirmed that the central charges and energies are correct to a very good precision, typically 0.1% or so. The advantage of the method is that it enables the calculation of all the dimensions and even the particular partition function.Comment: 22 pages.     A first step to accelerating fingerprint matching based on deformable minutiae clustering

    Fingerprint recognition is one of the most used biometric methods for authentication. The identification of a query fingerprint requires matching its minutiae against every minutiae of all the fingerprints of the database. The state-of-the-art matching algorithms are costly, from a computational point of view, and inefficient on large datasets. In this work, we include faster methods to accelerating DMC (the most accurate fingerprint matching algorithm based only on minutiae). In particular, we translate into C++ the functions of the algorithm which represent the most costly tasks of the code; we create a library with the new code and we link the library to the original C# code using a CLR Class Library project by means of a C++/CLI Wrapper. Our solution re-implements critical functions, e.g., the bit population count including a fast C++ PopCount library and the use of the squared Euclidean distance for calculating the minutiae neighborhood. The experimental results show a significant reduction of the execution time in the optimized functions of the matching algorithm. Finally, a novel approach to improve the matching algorithm, considering cache memory blocking and parallel data processing, is presented as future work.Universidad de Málaga.     Partition Functions, Duality, and the Tube Metric

    The partition function of type IIA and B strings on R^6xK3, in the T^4/Z_2 orbifold limit, is explicitly computed as a modular invariant sum over spin strutures required by perturbative unitarity in order to extend the analysis to include type II strings on R^6 x W4, where W4 is associated with the tube metric conformal field theory, given by the degrees of freedom transverse to the Neveu-Schwarz fivebrane solution. This generates partition functions and perturbative spectra of string theories in six space-time dimensions, associated with the modular invariants of the level k affine SU(2) Kac-Moody algebra. These theories provide a conformal field theory (i.e. perturbative) probe of non-perturbative (fivebrane) vacua. We contrast them with theories whose N=(4,4) sigma-model action contains n_H=k+2 hypermultiplets as well as vector supermultiplets, and where k is the level just mentioned. In Appendix B we also give a D=6, N=(1,1) `free fermion' string model which has a different moduli space of vacua from the 81 parameter space relevant to the above examples.Comment: 24 pages, TE

    Co-digestion of macroalgae for biogas production: an LCA-based environmental evaluation

    Algae represent a favourable and potentially sustainable source of biomass for bioenergy-based industrial pathways in the future. The study, performed on a real pilot plant implemented in Augusta (Italy) within the frame of the BioWALK4Biofuels project, aims to figure out whether seaweed (macroalgae) cultivated in near-shore open ponds could be considered a beneficial aspect as a source of biomass for biogas production within the co-digestion with local agricultural biological waste. The LCA results confirm that the analysed A and B scenarios (namely the algae-based co-digestion scenario and agricultural mix feedstock scenario) present an environmental performance more favourable than that achieved with conventional non-renewable-based technologies (specifically natural gas - Scenario C). Results show that the use of seaweed (Scenario A) represent a feasible solution in order to replace classical biomass used for biofuel production from a land-based feedstock. The improvement of the environmental performances is quantifiable on 10% respect to Scenario B, and 38 times higher than Scenario
